Dr. Mel Cown is a 1987 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia here in Athens. Earlier in 1981 he received an Associate of Science Degree (Honors) from Young Harris College, and in 1983, a Bachelors of Science (Magna Cum Laude) in Biology from the University of Georgia.
Dr. Cown is originally from Loganville, Georgia. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Valerie, and they have three children, two cats, and three dogs. His outside interests include snow skiing, music (especially sixties lounge music), piano, gardening, and conversational Spanish. He attends Prince Avenue Baptist Church where he and his wife help teach the five year old Sunday School class. Dr. Cown enjoys talking to preschool and elementary school students about petcare and the many facets of the veterinary profession. He offers, when available, employment to pre-vet undergraduate and veterinary students seeking exposure to the clinical and client oriented aspects of veterinary practice. Dr. Cown is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Sheryl Wilson has been with Athens Animal Hospital since July, 1991. She fills many shoes as Hospital Manager, Technician, and Groomer. She has been grooming dogs for 9 years, and has been involved with the veterinary profession for 20 years. She has three dogs, three horses, and a couple of barn cats. Outside activities include trail riding (especially in the mountains), almost anything outdoors, and a simple, quiet, "at the farm" lifestyle. She is also a licensed wildlife rehabililtor.
The permanent staff is rounded out by Kennel Supervisor, Timmy Hernandez. He has been with Athens Animal Hospital since March, 2001. He has a great repore with dogs and cats, which thrive under his watchful, compassionate care. He insures that all pets have a clean, safe, and secure environment to eat, sleep, and play.
Athens Animal Hospital serves a very diverse clientele. The hospital borders residential, industrial, and professional service communities. We welcome our long-time Athens neighbors, new residents, students, and internationals. Spanish is spoken on site.
